Fall Forage
Textile Art by Monique Kleinhans
Today's Saturday Share is a piece that includes a number of techniques...(one that I'm teaching today to another fun group of online students hosted by the lovely folks at The Original Sewing Expo!)
I had the pleasure of meeting Gloria Loughman when she was at Quilt Market in Portland a number of years ago--and then the added pleasure of enjoying a 5 day workshop with her at the Quilt Gallery a couple years ago. She has many techniques and books out in the world and I am always inspired when I see her work.
The tiling technique in the background of this piece is called Radiant Landscapes and it feels like painting with fabric. Carefully choosing fabrics to blend together (sometimes painting your own for just the right hue) and then playing with creating a light source in the work by finding the perfect placement of each tile.
The Bear wandering through was created by needle felting different shades of wool roving with a barbed needle to blend and bond the fibers together. Again...another form of painting--this time with thousand of small jabs (I highly recommend it for stress relief!)
I came to fall in love with needle felting from another artist, and friend who I'm happy to say has also joined in the fun of online teaching with Sewing Expo and has her first class now listed on their site. If you are looking for a creative outlet that allows you to stab things repeatedly (while creating something gorgeous) I can't recommend her class enough!
I have one of Gloria's books and her work is great. You were so lucky to have five days with her! Your work is so awesome too! Thanks for sharing this. Hope your workshop went well. I'm sure your students are thrilled!!!
ReplyDeleteAny chance I get to take a workshop with Gloria, I jump on it. She is a wonderful artist and a great teacher too!
